Rovaniemi – Finnish Lapland
Frequently asked questions
-
Yes — this is one of the biggest reasons families choose Arcticmint.
Our private villa sits in Norvajärvi, completely free of Rovaniemi's city lights and noise, so the Aurora Borealis is visible right from the grounds. No 11 pm minibus, no waking sleeping kids to drive somewhere dark.
When the sky is active, you simply step outside — or watch from the lakeside terrace with a blanket and hot cocoa. It's the difference between "chasing" the lights and actually living under them.
-
Completely. Families are who we built this for. The villa has spacious, safe, fenced private grounds, four bedrooms across two floors so parents and children each get real space, and plenty of room for everyone to spread out together.
There's no shared building, no other guests, and no city traffic — just your family, the forest, and the lake.
Many of our bookable experiences (reindeer visits, gentle ice fishing) are paced for children as young as 3–4, and evenings by the fire in our free-to-use Lapland hut are an easy, low-key favourite for younger kids too.
-
Yes — reindeer encounters at Arcticmint are arranged as a private visit for your family only, not a shared bus tour with strangers. Kids (and adults) get close-up time to feed, pet, and learn about Lapland's reindeer herding culture at an unhurried pace, with plenty of time for photos.
-
It's free — the Lapland hut (kota) is simply yours to use throughout your stay, included with the villa.
Many families end up there most evenings: it has an open fireplace at its centre, so it's warm and cozy whatever the weather is doing outside, and it's become one of the things guests love most about staying with us — just wander down, light the fire, and let the kids stay up a little later than usual.
If you'd like to make an evening extra special, it's also where we serve our fire-blazed salmon dinner as part of the tailored food experiences.
-
Both options are yours. Our villa has a fully-equipped, high-end kitchen made for real family cooking — if you want to shop local and cook together, you have everything you need, including space for the whole family to be in the kitchen at once. But you're never locked into DIY: we also offer tailored food experiences, from a fire-blazed salmon dinner at the Lapland hut to private chef-style meals built around your family's tastes and any allergies or dietary needs. Most families mix both — cook some nights, let us handle the special ones.
-
Arcticmint is about 20 minutes' drive from the centre of Rovaniemi and roughly 15–20 minutes from Santa Claus Village and Rovaniemi Airport.
That means you get the best of both: real Lapland wilderness, total privacy, and dark, light-pollution-free skies at the villa, while still being a short drive from Santa's Village, city restaurants, husky and snowmobile tours, and the airport for arrival day. No long transfers, no compromise.
-
Yes — ice fishing on the nearby lake is one of our signature family experiences, and no prior experience is needed. A guide sets everything up, shows kids and adults how to drill the hole and jig for a bite, and keeps things relaxed rather than a race to catch something.
It's a favourite quiet, unplugged activity for families who want to slow down together, and it's paired with a warming lunch by the open fire at our lakeside laavu afterward.
-
Arcticmint is a fully private villa — when you book, the entire property and grounds are yours alone. There is no shared building, no other families on site, and no communal areas to negotiate.
This is a deliberate choice: for families wanting a hassle-free, safe Lapland holiday, privacy means you set your own schedule, let children roam the grounds safely, and never worry about noise, strangers, or shared spaces during your stay.
-
At Arcticmint, your family gets a private home base for the whole trip: spacious multi-floor living areas, a real kitchen for cooking together, Northern
Lights and reindeer moments right on the grounds, and full privacy for the length of your stay. Combined with being just 20 minutes from Rovaniemi's attractions, it's built for families who want a premium, low-stress Lapland holiday where the setting itself does a lot of the work.
-
Yes — genuinely, not just in theory. The villa has a proper access ramp built to Finnish accessibility standards leading straight to the first floor, along with an accessible toilet and an accessible indoor sauna, all on that same level.
It's rare to find this kind of accessibility in a private Lapland villa, and it means grandparents, guests with mobility needs, or anyone using a wheelchair can move around comfortably without needing stairs.
-
Genuinely family-owned — this land on Norvajärvi has belonged to our family for generations, and the villa was built as our own family place before we opened it up to guests. When you stay here, you're staying somewhere we grew up loving, and we treat it — and you — accordingly.
-
You'll meet us. Jaana and family are hands-on hosts — we check you in personally, tell you the stories behind the place, and point you toward the best moment to catch the lights that night. If a question comes up mid-stay, you're reaching a real person who knows the villa and the lake.
-
Always. We're on-site or nearby throughout your stay and reachable any time, day or night, so a hassle-free holiday actually stays hassle-free. Whether it's a question about the sauna, a change to your food experience, or just wanting to know if tonight looks good for the Northern Lights, help is always close by.
-
Because Arcticmint is a single private villa, availability for the Northern Lights season (roughly late August through March, peaking around Christmas and New Year) fills early — many families book 6–12 months ahead for December dates. If you have specific dates or want experiences like the reindeer visit or a fire-blazed salmon dinner built into your stay, reach out early so we can tailor the full itinerary around your family.
-
The Arctic Spa is a bookable add-on rather than something left running for anyone to use — and there's a good reason for that. Our barrel hot tub isn't a chemical spa; we pump fresh water straight from Lake Norvajärvi, heat it specifically for your evening, and it's cleaned and reset by hand the next day using no chlorine or harsh chemicals at all. It's real lake water, not a shared, chemically-treated tub sitting ready 24/7 — which means it's prepared per booking, not on tap.
Arctic Spa (520€ per evening) includes the wood-heated barrel hot tub filled with fresh lake water, full private use of our 100-year-old traditional wood-heated sauna, and the option to finish with an authentic ice swim in the lake. It's a proper Finnish wellness ritual, not a hotel amenity — and booking it in advance means it's heated, filled, and ready exactly when you want it.
